Summary

Planet Nine from Outer Space, a talk by Dr. Konstantin Batygin, Assistant Professor of Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology. From the motions of icy bodies orbiting in the outermost Solar System, the existence of a ninth planet with a mass five times that of Earth has been predicted. Dr. Batygin will discuss the evidence for the planet and the prospects of finding it. After the talk, visitors will have a chance to look through the 100-inch Telescope.

Description

Planet Nine from Outer Space, a talk by Dr. Konstantin Batygin, Assistant Professor of Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology.
Over the past two decades, surveys have revealed the intricate orbital structure of the Kuiper Belt, a field of icy bodies orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune. In addition
to readily-predictable orbital behaviors, these trans-Neptunian objects display dynamics that cannot be explained by interactions with the eight known planets of the Solar System alone.
This new view of the distant solar system points to the existence of planet with five times the mass of Earth in a moderately inclined orbit. In his talk, Dr. Batygin will review the evidence and the prospects for detection of this proposed object known as Planet Nine.

After the lecture, the famous 100-inch Telescope will be opened for attendees to look through. This is contingent on the weather. The number of objects visitors will get to see will depend on the number in attendance. We want everyone to get a chance to look through the telescope Hubble used to discover the Universe.
